fetishman.co.uk - it's not porn, it's a comic
|
| ah sweet Thought Bubble … okay okay so partly I love it cos it’s in my city, Leeds (and a damn good city it is too! but i’m sure i’ve already ranted about it’s goodness), but it is just simply a damn good con. The organisers are lovely, the space is mighty, the mix of vendors is broad and awesome, and the same may be said of the public who attend, like the charming bearded man from Brighton!
Armed with a fully operational Mavis and both barrels of Clare we were off to a good start. It was a good crowd and i think we all spent a good amount of time just chatting with people, which at the end of the day is the finest manifestation of the Fetishman Empire’s zen-like not-selling-is-selling sales patter. Ingeniously our stall was wedged between Wayne Reynolds and Mal and Jo from Fallen Angel Media so it was a fun day, and i’d brought crockery and a teapot so it was always going to be a hoot.
Matt Sheret and We Are Words And Pictures were just across the aisle and it was delightful to finally meet and natter, and whilst i didn’t see much of them during the day i know that Chamonkee and Naniiebim were about, along with Ztoical and the Irish contingent who we all collided with later in the day. There were a bundle more people it was damned good to see again and a bundle more i missed – the only drawback of running a stall is not getting to bimble about so much.
One stranger-than-usual thing is we all got interviewed by a fellow for some research he’s doing – we all ramble on quite a bit but if you’re interested the rambling is embedded below:
As a fair addenda i present to you the things i vaguely mentioned:
http://topatoco.com – buy Jamie Smart’s stuff here! because i ask so nicely
http://www.thefallenangel.co.uk/
http://scottmccloud.com – read “understanding comics”, you don’t have to agree but it’s a good start
http://www.garynorthfield.co.uk – i think this is the genius responsible for “Bernard Cribbins’ Rousing Tales of High Adventure”
http://www.warrenellis.com – not mentioned i grant thee, but the absolute key to making comics is not just talking about what they can be but just actually making them … and dare i say it but Ellis would have to be the angry poster-child for making people make stuff happen.

| Done the comic, no need to catch up with some science and do the distribution thing. But that’s not really the point is it? That’s just stuff that needs to happen, the point is bringing the fetishman-ish joy to all the good/bad boys and girls and so i’m making plans!
Short notice i know but tonight I’m off to club lash with my pens (pens!) and other scribing devices where Ms Lugosi is hosting a mini-fayre for manchester’s fetish pleasure! Also i have finally made good on a promise and on the 12th of december i and the stall will be attending London’s mighty Festival of Sins!

| bundling the subscriber copies and science-ing my little heart out, but lo what’s that? Geof is returning to London’s premier fetish fair? Oh yes, i have missed the place. So if you’re in London this Sunday and wish to see the eagerly anticipated fetishman issue 1o “the perfect fetish”, then get thee to the Barbican, or more specifically the Parker-MacMillan nightclub where rude and rubbery retail rub social shoulders.

| Comic is at the printers, mugs are due to be delivered thursday, all i need to do now is sleep and science my tits off.
Once again the comic will hit the non-subscribing public at the whitby goth weekend – at the Leisure Centre as ever with my other stall-holding buddies and even an travelling Mavis! all much fun. One quick note though, the fetishman stall will only be trading friday and saturday, I’m reclaiming sunday (and thus saturday night) for hi-jinx and hilarity!

| almost there, i think tonight’s going to be the all-nighter and then it’s done. it’s at times like this that i depart from the one true tea-y way and partake of the coffee … until about 2am when I’m too jittery to drink anything so crudely stimulating and then it’s straight back on the tea.
at the london film and comic con earlier this year a pleasant couple of gentlemen approached me and asked if i’d like to yield unto them my top ten music tracks. Slightly baffled i said yes of course, i wondered if they’d misread the fetishman sign, maybe they’d got confused and thought i was some kind of scott bakula, but then they did actually email me and so it only seemed fair to actually generate a top ten.
Much flailing later i realised my music tastes are far too generous, hell i can find something nice to say about spice girls tracks (okay, that one’s “they’re no longer played on the radio thank satan” but nonetheless). As such i have no absolute top ten. I could have given them the fetishman top ten (tom lehrer, velvet underground, NIN) instead i gave them my if-i-had-to-put-up-with-a-really-crappy-mp3-player-that-only-had-space-for-ten-tracks-what-would-be-on-it top ten.

| If you attend the whitby goth weekend (hey, my spell-checker thinks that it should be “whitey”! bad spell-checker) as i, and more recently the fetishman stall, have a habit of doing, then you may be aware that there are some shenanigans going on that may result in either a split in the festival or the whole thing moving from it’s regular dates. This all sucks somewhat and the official organisers are circulating a petition to see if they can make it all a bit less “shenanigan-y” in the future.
http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/whitbydates
Have a read, have an opinion, circulate it to people you think might wish to know.
Like an idiot I’ve signed it twice (dare i say i got confused?), but to be honest I should be finishing the comic instead of working out what the ipetition donation page means.

issue ten’s shaping up nicely, I’m trying to track down the first subscribers to ask if they wish for more hot posted-fetishman-comic action, the fetishman banknotes need collecting, the whitby almanack heads to the printers soon, and rising like a leviathan from the fog of sleep deprivation comes the birmingham international comics show 2009. WHICH IS GOING TO BE SO MUCH FUN! entirely mavis-ed up and ready to roll, join us on the 2-4 october if you’re about.

| it’s like living in the future!
yes, about this time last year i deployed issue one of the comic as a primer/ lure/ introduction to the fetishman-ening in ebook form. i supposed little would come of it, it’s free because it’s only one issue … but somehow it seems to have been, thus far, accessed 55000 times. I’m wondering if perhaps i should put some others on there that require a small donation? somethign small because it’s all a bonus, but still somethign just to see if the current ebook is just accessed because it’s free and not for any better reason.
Anyway, if you have yet to peruse the first issue and were wondering just exactly what the difference between the webcomic and the print comic was, perhaps then you should attend this weblink and, with a little registration due to an understandably over-enthusiastic ratings policy, view some hot comic-y action:
http://www.myebook.com/index.php?option=ebook&id=1466
anyway, back to business, issue 10 is literally on the drawing board, and if all goes to plan the flyers should be ready for birmingham comic con next weekend (”flyers” i should say … i may possibly have created a fetishman banknote)

| cheers for your contributions to the science! over 5000 data points rising (but more would be even more awesome! send more people there! co-opt relatives! do it again! better science through superior fire-power says i!)

… and as promised here is an extensive briefing on the fetishman plans and an indication of their achievability:
0) fetishman dolls
they exist. and they’re good. sara makes them. just sorting out packaging. more news soon.
1) fetishman #10
i considered doing the inevitable spooky-zombie-goth issue but, seeing as we’re gaining a digit so it’s sort of an anniversary issue, it’s now pretty much certainly going to be the “fetish” issue: fetishman doubts his fetish-ness and attempts to out-fetish himself. and all humanity. If i remember to i think it’s the perfect opportunity for the phrase “needs more cowbell”. On the subject of anniversaries I’m also thinking some kind of launch event may be useful, but that’s one of those looser plans we’ll need to whip into shape closer to the day. the fabulous subscriber present is going to be some kind of sticker-y awesome, but i ain’t spoiling the surprise.
2) Mal and FAM
I’ve been going to comics conventions for a couple of years now and in that time have met many varied and charming people, and if you’ve been to more than a couple you may also know Mal from Fallen Angel Media, you know, manga drawing awesome with the cat ears? yeah, see i told you. Over the past year she’s started a small press print company (the alleged FAM), ran the small press half of the Bristol Comics convention, has taken on the role of publishing fetishman back issues and also is now leading the pack under “friends i know who may take over the world before me”. But you probably know these things or could infer them without difficulty.
What you don’t know is she’s expanding FAM to take on merchandise printing and in the not too distant future (she’s moving premises right now) is going to take over the fetishman on-line shop. As it can be print-on-demand i should be able to offer an even wider range of merchandise (oh yes, the warning sign t-shirts will finally be amongst us!) and, given some of the spare time this should yield unto me, she’ll then be publishing the long-awaited “my first fetishman” book and the first issue of the steampunk-rudery travel journal of Baron Von Wagner, known to myself and my co-author Gareth as the British Expeditionary Fetish Force or BEFF.
3) the island of doctor geof
I deliberately neglected this website this past year simply so that i could get the fetishman site re-vamped. Whilst i have a portfolio website, and i use deviant art for scraps and oddments, there’s a pile of physics and steampunk stuff that wouldn’t truly fit with the fetishman site, so in the next two months i intend to revive the island.
4) and beyond
there’s always stuff i could do, but here are the more plausible things: i need to do more shot glasses and some postcards for the whitby goth weekend (as mister speedy cannot cease to remind me); greetings cards and some good fetish art, with a leaning towards a few originals along with the prints; I’m sure i owe the steampunk magazine and nocturnal magazine some more bits; “do not do this” a tiny health and safety book for the under sevens; re-building the fetishman stall is a task that never ends, however next time i want wheels; a holy text for the religion i based around my mate ahmer (it’s so much easier to prove that he exists); my telegram-translator; a time machine; etc.

| Those of you who know me, or those of you who don’t but are blessed with the twin powers of deduction and inference, know well enough that by day i practise the dark arts – some kind of science research thing. Now, as fortune has it i need data and I’m optimistic you guys may have a few minutes of free time, so if you’d like to do me a massive favour then I’d be delighted if you could spend a few of yon minutes telling me and the gentlemen what glasses look better on people faces …
… no really. Trust me, it’s awesome. And if you’ve been coerced into doing any of the others i can assure you this one is far simpler. In fact if you can persuade other people to do it too it would be mighty.
If you can spare the time then click on the link below to start.

What can i offer you in return? I have no idea. Hell I’ve even started going to bed early just to get more stuff done in the day so i can’t even offer you that. Ooh, i know! Next week I’ll tell you all the cunningest schemes of the fetishman empire. But for now, science!

| ooh, it was a damn good laugh! did some sketches, sold some comics, chatted with lovely peoples, hung out with Mal and Will and Lou (Fallen Angel Media, Chamonkee, Naniiebim), conceived the steampunk hentai pop-up book, semi-officially joined the borg-teddy fan club … you know, the usual. All good, am now thinking of attending the Lincoln steampunk thing but we’ll have to see.

| right, this weekend i get to sell comics at earls’ court in london. if i get lucky i may even get to sell comics to scott bakula or michael ironside or bruce boxleitner or gwen from torchwood. if i get super unlucky a bunch of collectors will frown at me and ask if i have issue number 39 of the justice league of planetary thingamybobs. all of this amuses me. Mal from fallen angel media, the charming peeps who are making ever more fetishman stuffs, should be there too, so amusement at our circumstance should be two-fold. come! see! marvel! stalk some celebrities! prize for the “best celebrity signature on a fetishman comic” (send me a photo/link, dictator geof will choose!)! woo!

| … there we were, charging across an xbox-server-created battlefield, pixel-bullets zipping past our armour-plated virtual crania (cranii?) when we were treated to the most rallying-est plaintive-wail of a battle-cry ever. i swear i cried.
anyhoo, me not getting enough work done aside, if you don’t know about it I’d heartily recommend either the mata hari club tomorrow in leeds, or the london film and comic con. admittedly michael ironside will only be at one of these events, but if i get a chance i promise i’ll nick enough genetic material so that none of us will ever have to be without him again, and for that we need people! “come on you apes! do you want to live (without michael ironside) forever?!”
