anyhoo, me not getting enough work done aside, if you don’t know about it I’d heartily recommend either the mata hari club tomorrow in leeds, or the london film and comic con. admittedly michael ironside will only be at one of these events, but if i get a chance i promise i’ll nick enough genetic material so that none of us will ever have to be without him again, and for that we need people! “come on you apes! do you want to live (without michael ironside) forever?!”

Comicpress you fools.

Just finished the auto-update process for wordpress and various plugins – a little glitchy but here’s the thing: it’s an auto-update. Ever since i lost a night’s sleep and went ahead with the change to wordpress and comicpress it’s been a like a tiny techy giddy dream! comics can be scheduled, upgrades are waved at me whenever they’re needed, a couple of hour’s noodling in the online directory typically yields a serviceable tool for anything from a calendar to SEO management. Leaving me free to draw more, or get distracted by shiny things. Either. Both. Whatever, it’s definitely a good thing.

A redone website owes its thanks to a number of people. Newt and Jim and Tim for helping work out what I needed and then telling me to use Comicpress. Tyler Martin for writing Comicpress. Jamie Smart and David Malki for using Comicpress and thus persuading me that i should just shut up and get on with it. Tyler Martin for the latest version of Comicpress which is slick and beautiful.

Yep, the new fat chunk anthology by slg and the tireless jamie smart is upon us! and yes, once again i have been permitted to spew brain-flub across a couple of pages! anyway, in jamie’s own words:

did i tell you guys about Desire magazine? I’m sure i did. And by sure i mean i have no idea. You know it’s the porn mag that’s not a porn mag - sexy and a bit rude and also a bit smart and lippy. So smart, some might say, that they’ve had (had!) fetishman strips (strips!) in the last 3 issues, the latest 2 of which have been special 2 page spreads (spread! I’d swear sometimes I’m just an inhuman innuendo machine), the first of which is repeated for your viewing pleasure today and next Friday.

The second is currently in issue 73 of Desire which i have heard rumours may be the last of it’s ilk - so if you want to see the comic that killed a mainstream publication it’s prolly £5 from your local (well, perhaps not your local) newsagents. Or if it’s in Smiths you can sneak a sly look while everyone else is pretending to look at the hobby magazines on the shelf below.

The Bristol Small Press Expo 2009 was last weekend and I’m pleased to say it was a hoot and a half!

Okay, so ’tis a shame that Bristol had to split into two cons, but what the small press ended up with is a lovely little conference, especially considering it was pulled together in just the past 3 months, at a far-too-good-for-the-likes-of-us venue and with a bundle of fans kicking around who were actually quite interested in small press comics.

high points?

• Mal who organised it, feckin’ god-like. Oh yeah, and she does my re-prints for issues 1 and 2.  And possibly a few issue 3 if  I need them to tide me over to the graphic novel. And maybe the graphic novel. And definitely the BEFF stuff when i get that wrapped. And for choosing boobs over booze.
• Mavis selling comics to people. No single incidence rates higher than any other, it was god-like. At one point i’d swear he sold comics without resorting to the use of mere spoken language.
• Tim being self-less driver monkey for the weekend.
• Tim and I both being glowered at by Gilbert Shelton after we tried to buy comics from him …
• Dancing to “99 red balloons”
• Geek Syndicate because they’re a hoot
• Sarah and vicky for putting up with us and us up

Yeah, we’ll be going to next years, so long as there’s cider we’re sorted

I’m alive! I can barely believe it but i really am. So …
… there is an issue 9 out now (and this time the subscriber mail-out was like a well-lubed machine - the subscribers could probably still smell factory on their copies .. hopefully not lube … i may have to check)
… whitby goth weekend was a beauty (most comics sold yet, good company, fine booze, and my good lady either on my arm or at the very least gadding about whitby which isn’t ever too big to be far from it)
… there be shot glasses (so lovely! although demonstrating their shot delivering power at 11am on the saturday wgw stall probably was less than the mightiest plan)
… the exhibition is over in Sh! (boo) but was apparently a veritable hit (yay!)
… and i have just recovered from my annual death-cold (i shrug off a lot of them but once in a while one floors me … and then fills my face with goop … i’m sure there’s a metaphor there)

what next? well lots, but most importantly

April appear to be a publications-fest for the fetishman empire. Whilst I feverishly toil away at the science and the issue 9 (”look fetishman! space criminals! and they’re space getting away with it! space!”) it’s also just about a day or so before Gav sends the latest collaborative wgw flyer “The Whitby Almanack” to the printers in time for the goth weekend.

But that seems to not be enough as this month sees a special 2-page strip in the UK’s “Desire” Magazine! It’s awesome! There’re nuns! go! go have look see (um, somewhere in the April issue, the pink and blue one … might be number 62 but my copy seems to have been temporarily mislaid …)!

so, tosummarise: april be stuffed with stuff, woohoo!

I mean it’s got little tanks in it, and tanks always win in a “tanks versus” conceptual battle (yes, yes, clearly not the case in less theoretical conflicts but just leave it be. leave it!). And if we’re including “evar” then it still goes to the fetishman tea cosy that heather kindly created last year (tea!)(ooh, tanks vs tea? who wins? I think this is similar to the contradiction that incited mine and Ahmer’s rant at the other night’s television where some science dude claimed that the nuclear force(’s’ from a certain point of view) were ‘the strongest force in the universe’ which is clearly rubbish cos it depends what length scale you’re talking about - if the nuclear forces didn’t exist there’d be no atoms, if gravity didn’t exist there’d be no walking around the surface of the earth making outrageous claims that the strongest force in the universe is the nuclear force(s)).

ANYWAY. that said, “best present evar” (this year)(barring the awesomeness of tanks and tea) is the present my brother and his missus made me.
